FRANCE has unveiled super high speed train that will travel at almost a third the speed of sound (250 MPH) (the speed of sound is 343.2 metres per second (1,126 ft/s) – or 1,236 kilometres per hour (768 mph) .
The Super High Speed AGV II’s 250mph cruising speed would get passengers from London to Paris in just 90 minutes.
Engineering giant Alstom says the Super High Speed train will succeed its 225mph AGV I, which goes into service in France and Italy this year.
A spokesman said it was being designed in response to rival Siemens winning a contract to build Eurostar Super High Speed trains back in 2008.
Alstom gave a peek inside these Super High Speed Trains at the Paris Air Show this week.
Features include:
- Articulated architecture for improved safety and comfort,
-
Distributed power to increase on-board capacity by 20% in comparison with trains with concentrated power, tested under the extreme conditions of the rail speed record**,
- Commercial speed of up to 360km/h,
- Design combining pure lines and fluid forms.
Additionally,
- Train lengths are modular (from 1 to 3 train sets) and so is the interior layout,
- The life cycle cost and electric consumption are 15% lower than competitors,
- Up to 98% of the AGV’s components are recyclable,
-
Circulation inside the AGV is the most generous on the market (while respecting European UIC / STI standards) for optimum interior comfort.

Great technology article! That is amazing, Paris to London in 90 minutes, incredible. I hope the safety standards are ultra diligent. This is truly a huge technological milestone.
